Directors Report -
Anniversary of the Greater Lauraville
Gazette!
Welcome to the first
anniversary edition of the Greater Lauraville
Gazette! Yes, it was one year ago that Krista
Mahler helped launch the first electronic
newsletter. Back then we were busy announcing
new initiatives here at the Neighborhoods of
Greater Lauraville, and keeping you informed
about the various construction projects on
Harford Road and in the surrounding
area.
Most of the road and streetscape
improvements are complete, and looking good! The
website redesign is complete, and the nogli-news
Google Group hosts 255 subscribers, and offers
the option to many more to review posts directly
from the webpage
http://groups.google.com/group/nogli-
news.
The newsletter itself has over
500 subscribers and is slated for a design
overhaul in 2008.
We weren't just
sitting here, behind the computer communicating;
we were out and about, chatting it up about how
great it is to live in Greater Lauraville. You
may have seen us at Live Baltimore events, the
Ecofestival in Druid Hill Park, at the Youth
Festival in Herring Run Park last June, the
Greater Lauraville Fair, and our own Annual
Meeting. We successfully advocated for a change
in eviction processes that stop a tenant's
possessions from being left on our streets with
Citizen's Planning and Housing (CPHA)

and brought the Buy Local
program to Greater Lauraville

html.
We've organized over $4,000 in
block projects, and helped local homeowners get
below market rate financing through the Healthy
Neighborhoods Program. Finally, we added
Hamilton Hills as our 7th member neighborhood
and look forward to the fruits of the expansion
in 2008.
So, what's ahead for the
Neighborhoods of Greater Lauraville in 2008?
Here's a glimpse at our program priorities for
the year ahead:
· The economic
development committee will focus on developing
marketing materials for the Lauraville Business
District as a whole, as well as specific vacant
parcels along Harford Road. · We will have a
stronger working relationship with the Hamilton
Business District through events and promotional
activities. · The residential committee will
be hosting information events on the Historic
Tax Credits in the area, for realtors and other
professionals who market our neighborhoods and
their homes, and several new events. · The
website, list serve, and newsletter will
continue to expand offering more information to
local residents, business owners, and potential
new homeowners. · We will have news about the
development of 4500 Harford Road. · The 2008
Annual Meeting looks to be as festive as the one
just past. · We have at least 5 Healthy
Neighborhoods block projects ready to be
implemented in the first quarter of 2008.
I look forward to working with you in
2008. Happy Holidays & Happy New
Year!

Santa Gets Clipped in
Waltherson By Mike Bornemann
In a recent interview of
Santa Claus (we have "connections"), the
Walthersonian learned that he will be appearing
again this year at Will's Hairstyling and
Barbering at 5121 Harford Road in Waltherson the
Saturday before Christmas. Old Santa usually
gets a trim to cut down on wind resistance
during his Christmas Eve flight. While at
Will's, he invites children of all ages to have
their pictures taken with him. Parents are
welcome to bring their cameras, and/or Will can
send them a free digital photo of their child
and Santa as an email attachment. Santa will be
available from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday,
December 22. "You don't even have to get
your hair cut, unless you want to look really
good for the holidays." added Will Colhouer, a
Waltherson business owner since 1980.
This will be Santa's third visit to
Will's, and the jolly, old, fat man (Santa, not
Will) has had a ball every time. "I find
Waltherson to be the Eden of the eastern
hemisphere - well, of northeast Baltimore,
anyway." Santa mused. "Your history, your
vitality, your diversity. . ." he went on (and
on) "Why, last year I sang Christmas carols with
10-year-old Rachel and her 6- year-old sister
Beth for half an hour at Will's before they
politely told me that they were Jewish. After
that, they taught old Santa Hanukkah songs about
dreidels and menorahs, and we had a wonderful
time." At this point in the interview, Santa
laughed, and his belly shook like the proverbial
"bowl full of jelly" - really!
"Even
though I have my suit cleaned at Kim's Tailoring
and Dry Cleaning in Hamilton Heights, and Mrs.
Claus and I sneak down to Lauraville for one of
Koco's world-famous crab cakes after my annual
flight, I am partial to the Waltherson
neighborhood." admitted the big guy. "Mrs. Claus
thinks it's because you Walthersonians keep the
joy of the season alive throughout the year. But
I think it's because you are going to make my
job easier by buying all those Waltherson flags
as gifts for neighbors and friends."
"Let those Waltherson flags fly!" Santa
bellowed. "That way I'll be sure to look down
and pick out your house."
Merry
Christmas! See you at Will's!
